Born in 1712 in Geneva and died in 1778 in Ermenonville, writer, one of the great figures of the philosophy of the contract, at least critical contributor to the Enlightenment, contempt of the idea of progress, botanist and musician. His new outlook on nature makes him a forerunner of romanticism. His texts reveal an exaltation of the natural environment as a place of rest and calm, contrasting with another vision, dominant at the time, sometimes mixing desire for exploitation and feelings of terror.
