American painter born in 1796 in Pennsylvania and died in 1872 in New Jersey. An impressive meeting with an Indian delegation in Philadelphia in 1824 led him to devote his life to painting Indians and to represent the habits and customs. By paying tribute to them, his work bears witness to the life of these peoples whom he thought threatened with disappearance.
